Cpanel Update - v5 Major Upgrade
| |
#1 | |
|

Earlier today the automatic Cpanel update kicked in and right away I noticed two things:
1. The Bookmark for Cpanel Login that I have required the Username/Password to be inputted as if brand new. Which in a way it is, as going from version 4 to version 5 would be considered a major upgrade.
2. Under "Account Information" in Cpanel, there is now a listing for "SQL Disk Usage" which is kind of handy. There has previously been a listing for how many mySQL DBs one is using and now, one can also see how much space is being used.
As I don't have a photographic memory and cannot remember the way everything was in version 4, I can only presume not too many other changes were made. Seems v4 was screwing up some scripts though, (for me anyway) and they have mostly been corrected now. Documentation is still for v4 and since I haven't received any word of really major or important changes, I am going to say there haven't been any. I reserve the right, though, to correct myself later.
I still recommend not using Spam Assassin and although I have not personally used the HotLink Protection feature, others tell me it doesn't work that well. I use another method which I will be posting a Tutorial on, in the near future. Got to finish getting the rest of the site back up to par!

Hey, Rob ~
Do I understand correctly that you've enabled access to Spam Assassin?
I see it in my cPanel Reseller admin interface: "WHM > Packages > Feature Manager > Spam Assassin".
However, when I enable this feature, save, and then visit a given domain's cPanel screen (that uses the feature set wherein I enabled Spam Assassin) it's not showing at: "cPanel > Mail".
I have a client who receives a lot of spam (that which makes it through the spam database filters) and he's now getting Spam Assassin email notices. I'd like to tweak the Spam Assassin settings.
Please advise.
Best,
Kirk

Even though this thread is 2 years old, Spam Assassin is still not used. We are looking at other methods as SA is somewhat resource heavy. There have been some improvements though and doesn't cause as much problems with Cpanel as it used to.
We might take a look at using SA, if the alternatives do not work as good as we hope. Won't go into details at the moment as we'd rather wait and say we have something that works, rather then having Clients start to get used to using something and then have to take it away.

Thanks, Rob.
Got it -- Spam Assassin is still not enabled, even though it's on the Feature Manager screen. Sorry, I didn't note the age of this thread; just searched for "Spam Assassin" here in the forum.
Now I need to figure out why my client is receiving Spam Assassin notices again. The email account they're coming in on is one of his domain's POP3 server-based accounts, and he's not forwarding to an external ISP. I'll have him send me the full email headers.
Aloha,
Kirk

Spam Assassin Appears to be Installed

Hi, Rob ~
After some research today, it appears that Spam Assassin is indeed installed on your server, at least for this domain (see full headers included below). The "Required" setting is at 4.00 and the client has many message subject headers being remapped by Spam Assassin.
Please advise.
Best,
Kirk

In situations where an account has been transferred from another Server that was using a particular feature, such as this one, it is possible for the feature to continue working. Spam Assassin is a 3rd party program and as such, is not dependant upon a Control Panel in order to work.
Spam Assassin only needs certain Perl modules, which WHM installs by default, and certain directory/files. As the modules are installed on our Servers and the the required SA directories and files were transferred with the account, that is why SA is still working for them.

Thanks for the clarification, Rob. Interesting.
OK, well I need to either be able to have access, somehow, to the Spam Assassin settings, since the current 4.00 setting is too aggressive a filter, or have you delete/disable the SA files. It's not going to work to have a phantom Spam Assassin installed and filtering email, but have no control over its functions. Either option is fine with me.
(Normally, I'd just terminate the domain, reset cPanel settings, and re-FTP up my clients files, but this particular client is an attorney and his domain receives a high volume of email, much of which is sitting in the POP3 box and is crucial to his business.)
Please advise.
Thanks,
Kirk

You wouldn't want to delete/recreate the account as that is too much of a hassle. As all SA related directories & files are in the Account Root, you can edit any settings or just delete everything related to SA.

Thanks, Rob. That did the trick.
For any users that may run into the same issues, be aware that most of the Spam Assassin directories and files are proceeded with a "dot" (period) and they won't display in FTP. So, they'll need to use the cPanel File Manager to access the data and change settigns.
Aloha,
Kirk out.

Glad the solution was an easy one.
Most FTP programs do allow one to see directories/files that start with a dot (.) but one may have to search to find the setting. It's different for each FTP program so examples cannot be given.
